HDMI ready players didn't start coming onto the market until late 2004 when VHS was on it's deathbed and only months out from it's final releases
So I believe most were these recorders/dubbers that were sold to an enthusiast market. There's also some BR/VCR combo players from the early days of the Blu-Ray format but those are super rare and sought after by VHS collectors
