It’s a proud day for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). According to the
*U.S. News and World Report*, MIT is ranked as the fifth best college in the country. In the past, the school had occupied the seventh spot on the list. It is currently tied with Columbia and Stanford University. This is impressive to say the least, but what really sets MIT apart is its engineering programs

The undergraduate engineering programs at MIT remain at the top of the charts, coming in at first place in the entire country. As if that’s not enough, the college ranked first in six out of the 12 engineering disciplines. No other institute achieved number one in more than two disciplines

The six engineering specialities that MIT reigns supreme in are: aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical/electronic/communications engineering, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering. It ranked third in biomedical engineering and fifth in civil engineering

While MIT was easily the most honored when it comes to engineering school, it was not the only one to receive commendations: Georgia Tech, Caltech, Berkeley, and Stanford rounded out the rest of the top five undergraduate engineering programs

Overall rankings are determined in large part by a ‘peer assessment score.’ This scoring system records the opinions and attitudes of presidents, provosts, and top admissions officials from peer institutions. When it comes to these crucial peer assessment scores, MIT tied for the highest rating of a 4.9 out of 5. Princeton, Harvard, and Stanford also earned this score. In rankings from high school counselors, MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale all received 5.0 assessment scores

A clue as to MIT’s high engineering school scores might lie in its overall rating. The college was ranked as the third most innovative in the nation in a peer assessment by top academics. This commitment to cutting edge technology has served MIT well in the past, and will surely continue to challenge and inspire present and future students

Students who are seeking out engineering programs have an additional incentive to check out MIT: the report also ranked the school as the fifth national university in the nation when it comes to offering students the best economic value
